Cooley Joins the Boston Bar Association as its Newest Sponsor Firm

Press Release

The Boston Bar Association is pleased to announce that the Boston Office of international law firm, Cooley, is the BBA’s newest Sponsor Firm. Cooley joins the BBA’s growing network of 141 sponsor law firms, legal departments, government agencies, non-profits, and law schools.

“With thanks to our clients, we’ve built something special in Boston, and we look forward to collaborating with the BBA to further our commitment to serving this great city and its communities,” said Boston-based partner Luke Cadigan, who also heads the firm’s East Coast litigation practice.

Several Cooley partners and associates have contributed their expertise and experience to the BBA and the Boston legal community through leadership roles within the BBA’s Business Transactions and Financial Services Sections, in industry conference advisory committees, and on steering committees for major events like the Law Day Celebration, BBF Adams Benefit, and Annual Meeting.

Cooley lawyers have also donated their time to a number of BBA pro bono trainings and public service programs, including the BBA Summer Jobs Program and Public Interest Leadership Program.

Cooley’s lawyers solve legal issues for entrepreneurs, investors, financial institutions and established companies with a significant emphasis on technology, life sciences and other high-growth industries. Clients partner with Cooley on transformative deals, complex IP and regulatory matters and bet-the-company litigation, where innovation meets the law. Cooley goes to great lengths to maintain the culture of teamwork, collaboration, respect and excellence upon which it was established in 1920. Cooley strives to maintain an environment of diversity and inclusiveness and to create opportunities for professional growth. Cooley considers its commitment to the communities in which it operates to be one of its highest priorities and each year performs thousands of hours of pro bono legal services and other forms of community service.

In 2007, Cooley launched an office in Boston’s historic Back Bay to provide legal counsel to technology and life sciences companies and investors in the region. During the last decade, Cooley has been one of the fastest growing law firms in Boston and is now home to more than 120 lawyers, technology specialists, quantitative analysts, paralegals and staff. The firm has been engaged in some of the region’s highest profile technology and life sciences corporate and litigation matters. Cooley is now one of the world’s leading law firms – with 1,200 lawyers across 17 offices in the US, Europe and Asia – and Boston has been a key part of the firm’s success.

Cooley is committed to fighting for racial justice and effecting systemic change within the firm, the legal industry and its communities through ongoing education, engagement, and action. The firm’s pro bono efforts for expanding access to justice run deep and strong. Its litigation docket includes cases challenging police misconduct, protecting voting rights, as well as a case headed to trial against the organizers of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. The BBA was pleased to join Cooley in support of equitable admissions policies for Boston’s prestigious public high schools, joining the Anti-Defamation League’s amicus brief drafted by Cooley partners Michael Sheetz and Adam Gershenson. The brief demonstrated that diversity benefits all students and local businesses because it helps create a generation of leaders equipped to compete in a diverse, global marketplace, and the federal judge in the case ruled that the school district’s plan to deliver those benefits could remain in place.

Cooley’s efforts span firmwide and through many avenues, such as partnering with various organizations who are moving the needle in their communities, the US and the globe. In Boston, Cooley is joining hands with local nonprofit King Boston, a privately funded initiative working to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,. and Coretta Scott King and address economic and racial inequities in the city. The firm’s contribution will support the design and development of King Boston’s first endeavor, “The Embrace,” a monument in Freedom Plaza on the Boston Common, America’s oldest public park, that will honor the Kings, Boston’s civil rights leaders and the city’s historical contributions to social justice.

“Cooley is thrilled to sponsor the Boston Bar Association as we continue to strengthen the partnerships we’ve forged across the local legal community since landing in Boston more than a decade ago,” said Heidi Erlacher, partner in charge of Cooley’s Boston office.
