Cashing in on Financial Literacy: Three Organizations Take on Volunteer Commitment

Press Release

As the tenth anniversary of the M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy program approaches, the Boston Bar Association today announced that a Boston law firm and two corporate legal departments have signed on to adopt classrooms for the coming Financial Literacy series beginning January 2014. Choate Hall & Stewart, Liberty Mutual, and Sun Life Financial will be providing volunteers for classroom-based sessions of the Financial Literacy Program. By adopting classrooms, these organizations commit to sending six volunteers to cover the three classroom-based sessions of the program.

Choate Hall & Stewart will be adopting a classroom at the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers. Liberty Mutual plans to adopt the entirety of Boston Community Leadership Academy, divided into four classrooms for the program. As they have done for the past several years, Sun Life Financial will adopt a classroom at Joseph P. Keefe Technical School in Framingham.

With the help of more than 350 volunteers, the M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program has taught over 3,300 students statewide about fiscal responsibility since 2005. This program consists of three classroom modules along with a mock hearing at the United States Bankruptcy Court. Topics covered include personal finance & budgeting, using credit and credit cards, buying a car, and consequences of poor financial management.
