Submitting an Article or Proposal for Publication

Authors interested in submitting a proposal or an article for publication in the BBA Family Law Section Newsletter (Newsletter) should submit it by email to Wendy O. Hickey, Esq. at or Rosanne Klovee, Esq. at  All proposals and articles are subject to review by the co-chairs of the BBA Family Law Communications Committee.  All submissions must conform to the guidelines set forth below.  If the submission is a proposal for an article, the Communications Committee co-chairs will discuss and provide feedback to the author within a week of receiving the proposal together with information on deadlines for submissions.

Authors submitting articles should pay close attention to the following guidelines:

            The Newsletter does not publish articles that have previously appeared in other print or electronic publications.

            The Newsletter does not publish articles whose primary purpose is to pitch specific products or services but will publish articles describing and encouraging participation in pro bono projects.

            Under no circumstances should articles be used for fund-raising purposes.


Articles should be arranged in the following order:


            Author’s name

            Acknowledgement of assistance, if applicable or desired

            Text of article

            Endnotes are only permitted for Legal Analysis articles, and are designed to provide readers with the precise citation required for court submissions.  Cases cited should be kept in the text of the article rather than placed in the endnotes.  All names of cases should be italicized, not underlined.  All endnotes must conform to The Bluebook:  A Uniform System of Citation.


Hyperlinks are helpful but should be limited to 5 per article.  Hyperlinks should be used for the express purpose of directing readers to sites with particularly important content or a direct connection to an issue being discussed in the article.  Please note that hyperlinks should never be a substitute for content, thorough or careful editing.  Authors are responsible for checking to ensure hyperlinks are valid and do not violate a web site’s terms of use.

Biographical Statement

A short biographical statement must be provided at the time the proposal or article is submitted.  The statement should include the current position(s) of the author(s) and any affiliations with the BBA.  The statement should be created as a separate file and submitted as an e-mail attachment.


A headshot of the author(s), preferably in color, should be submitted as a .jpg attachment.  The resolution of the photograph(s) must be at least 300 dpi.  Portraits taken by professional photographers work best.

Checking Citations and Shepardizing

Authors are responsible for checking all citations of any case references and footnotes, and for shepardizing any cases referred to in the article.

Authors are required to proofread their own material.  The Communications Committee Co-Chairs reserve the right to read the submissions and make further grammatical and typographical edits as may be necessary and, to the extent made, will not circulate the article back to the author prior to publication.  In the event the Co-Chairs believe a substantive change is warranted, same will be discussed and circulated back to the author prior to publication.
