Supporting military personnel, veterans and their families

A veteran and a two people.

The Military & Veterans Legal Help Line of the BBA Lawyer Referral Service

As part of our ongoing efforts to provide crucial legal assistance to military personnel and veterans, the Boston Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service houses the Military & Veterans Legal Help Line. This line was established to connect veterans, military personnel, and their families with lawyers and other legal resources appropriate to their needs. The service will refer callers to qualified attorneys offering reduced fee legal assistance or the appropriate government or non-profit agency. All attorneys on the Lawyer Referral Service who have elected to take these cases are trained to assist with the unique legal issues that members of the military and their families face.

Military & Veterans Mentoring Program

The BBA’s Active Duty Military & Veterans Forum recognizes the unique position and challenges faced by military-affiliated individuals who are new to the legal profession in Boston. The BBA’s Military & Veterans Mentoring Program connects law students and attorneys new to the Boston area with more senior members of the bar to assist with navigating the transition from the military to the legal profession. Interested mentors and mentees should complete the corresponding online information forms linked to below.

For Mentees

Law students and new attorneys with military affiliation are invited to sign-up as a mentee. Mentees can request mentorship and guidance on resume writing or interview prep, or to speak and learn about Boston’s legal community.

For Mentors

Military-affiliated BBA Members with five years or more of experience in the legal profession can sign-up as mentors. As a mentor, you will be matched with a law student or new attorney hoping to meet and learn from experienced legal professionals with military backgrounds. You can offer guidance on resume writing or interview prep, or speak about your perspectives as a servicemember/veteran practicing law in Boston.

Veterans Meet & Greet Luncheons

Luncheons at the Boston Bar Association. These lunches convene current members of the military, veterans, and their families and friends in the legal community for casual, open discussion. Occasionally, guest speakers from both in and outside the legal community are invited to present on their work with the veterans community.

Veterans Pro Bono Trainings

Throughout the year, the Boston Bar Association partners with area legal services organizations to host pro bono trainings on veterans’ specific issues. Previous training topics include family law, veteran’s benefits, and discharge upgrades. We hope that through these trainings, we can increase the number of attorneys able to assist this underserved population.
