Today, the U.S. took a substantial step closer to truly ensuring equal justice for all. The Boston Bar Association could not be more pleased with the historic decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize marriage equality. Same-sex couples have been denied a striking number of core rights and protections, which are automatically granted to married couples. This discrimination is unacceptable, unconstitutional, and thankfully now in our past.
The Boston Bar Association has been a consistent supporter of marriage equality. Since Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health in 2002, we have submitted numerous amicus briefs in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage. We are immensely proud of this work, and we offer our heartfelt congratulations to Mary Bonauto, GLAD, Douglas Hallward-Driemeier of Ropes & Gray, Attorney General Maura Healey, her predecessor Martha Coakley and all who have worked alongside them to make this day possible – as well as to all the couples in states affected by this ruling who will now enjoy the rights that were first bestowed on same-sex couples in Massachusetts.
