We are pleased to welcome the Office of the General Counsel of the University of Massachusetts (UMass) as the newest sponsor organization of the Boston Bar Association.
The UMass Office of the General Counsel acts as the university’s “in-house law firm,” consulting on institutional policies and procedures and providing guidance to ensure the school is compliant with state and federal laws and regulations. The Office of the General Counsel’s Office is made up of one General Counsel and two Deputy General Counsels, and it is their responsibility to oversee legal matters for all five UMass campuses.
The attorneys in the Office of General Counsel work on issues including, but not limited to, labor and employment; intellectual property (patent, trademark, copyright, and licensing); immigration and international affairs; litigation; governance and compliance; ethics; risk management; real estate; and commercial and contract law.
The mission of UMass is to “provide an affordable and accessible education of high quality and to conduct programs of research and public service that advance knowledge and improve the lives of the people of the Commonwealth, the nation and the world.” This aligns closely with the Boston Bar Association’s dedication to providing quality educational programming for legal professionals and serving the public at large.
“My colleagues and I enthusiastically support the Boston Bar in its mission to foster professional excellence, promote diversity and inclusion in the legal community, expand access to justice and serve the community. We look forward to an ongoing partnership with the organization,” UMass General Counsel Gerard Leone said.
