MIRA Coalition & Jessica Chicco: Lighting the Path for Immigrant Communities

Article

In the heart of Massachusetts, where communities intersect and cultures converge, the MIRA Coalition stands as a beacon for immigrants and refugees seeking not just safety but belonging. Since 1987, MIRA has united over 150 member organizations spanning legal aid, education, social services, and advocacy under a single mission: to empower immigrants to fully participate in civic, economic, and cultural life.

At the center of this mission is Jessica Chicco, MIRA’s Director of Training, whose work transforms knowledge into empowerment. Jessica brings a rare blend of legal acumen, cultural fluency, and heartfelt dedication. Having lived in Italy, Corsica, Senegal, and Spain, and fluent in Spanish and Italian (with a working knowledge of Portuguese and French), she understands the nuances of navigating both legal and cultural worlds.

Education as Empowerment

Under Jessica’s guidance, MIRA’s training programs serve as lifelines to underserved communities. Through workshops on “Know Your Rights,” immigration enforcement, family preparedness, and workplace protections, immigrants gain the clarity and confidence to claim their rights. One participant shared after a session: “For the first time, I felt like I understood my place here and that I had the power to protect my family.”

These sessions, often delivered in multiple languages, bridge gaps that policy alone cannot address, transforming anxiety into agency, confusion into courage.

Building Leaders, Strengthening Communities

Jessica also spearheads the Colibrí Fellowship, a transformative program that cultivates the next generation of community-based legal advocates. Through mentorship, training, and hands-on support, the fellowship ensures that those serving immigrant communities are equipped not only with expertise but with empathy and vision.

MIRA’s influence extends beyond education. The organization engages in policy advocacy, fighting for inclusive legislation like the Safe Communities Act and amplifying the voices of immigrants in municipal, state, and national conversations.

A Personal Commitment

Jessica’s work is rooted in lived experience. She has walked the pathways of displacement, transition, and adaptation herself, giving her a profound empathy for those navigating similar journeys. Her commitment is not abstract. It is tangible, felt in the calm assurance she brings to anxious families, in the mentorship she provides to fledgling advocates, and in the courage she inspires in communities facing systemic challenges.

A Lasting Impact

MIRA Coalition is more than an organization. It is a bridge from fear to understanding, from uncertainty to empowerment, from isolation to community. MIRA ensures that immigrants and refugees are supported and empowered to flourish in every facet of life in Massachusetts.

“Every training, every conversation, every moment of guidance,” Jessica says, “is a step toward a future where every immigrant knows their worth and their rights.”
