Meet Odette Martins, Co-Chair of the BBA’s Intellectual Property Section and a senior associate trademark attorney at Day Pitney. This year, Odette is looking forward to strengthening connections within Boston’s IP community while exploring the new issues and trends shaping the field. At the top of the list? AI and its impact on intellectual property rights and practice. She’s especially excited to bring practitioners together to explore how AI is changing IP law, how attorneys can use AI effectively, and how to help clients protect their intellectual property in an evolving landscape.
What are you most looking forward to as a Section Co-Chair this year?
I am looking forward to meeting new people and strengthening my connections with the Boston IP community. I’m also looking forward to another year of new programming and learning about new issues in the intellectual property space. IP is constantly changing and developing, and I’m excited to hear more about the various trends that practitioners are curious about and focused on. IP Year in Review, for example, is a great annual event hosted by the Section, bringing together excellent speakers and valuable updates across all areas of IP law (i.e. copyright, patent, trademark, and trade secret). I’m excited to see what new topics come up and who joins us as speakers this year.
What’s one issue or trend in your practice area you’ll be watching closely?
One trend the IP Section will definitely be watching closely is the impact of AI on intellectual property and intellectual property owners’ rights. There are many important considerations to take into account when advising clients on effective IP protections and practitioners are increasingly interested in ways to incorporate AI into their practices. I’m looking forward to programming revolving around how to advise clients on maintaining IP rights, how IP practitioners can use AI more effectively and efficiently, and exploring how AI is continuing to change the way we view IP law.
Why would you encourage someone to get involved with a BBA Section?
I would encourage anyone interested in IP law to get involved with the BBA IP Section if they want to learn more about various aspects of the field and broaden their network. The IP Section is a great way to learn from experienced practitioners at both firms and corporations, while also building relationships. It is a great way to get leadership experience, plan interesting events, and work with others who are also passionate about IP. If you’re a new practitioner and want to get more involved with the BBA generally but aren’t sure where to start, a BBA practice group section is a great way to get a sense of what the BBA does and meet others who share similar interests.
