We are deeply grieved to hear of Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s passing. As mayor, Tom Menino served the City of Boston faithfully and with immense strength of character. He was deeply committed to the welfare of its residents and improving their quality of life.
In this spirit, Mayor Menino was particularly focused on education and the success of Boston youth. We at the BBA are proud to have worked collaboratively on his citywide initiative to provide gainful summer employment for Boston youth through the BBA Summer Jobs Program — which places diverse public high school students in paid internships at law firms and legal organizations throughout the city. The program has blossomed during its more than 20 year partnership with the Mayor’s Office and the Private Industry Council, nearly tripling in size since its inception. True to his commitment to the young people of Boston, Mayor Menino attended the BBA’s Summer Jobs kickoff conference year after year, offering words of encouragement and praise to the students.
“Mayor Menino never forgot that what truly defines Boston is its people. One of the many reasons he was such a great leader is because he held people, including the legal community, to extremely high standards, especially when it came to positively affecting the lives of Boston’s residents,” said BBA President Julia Huston.
Recognizing the lasting impact Mayor Menino has had on the City of Boston, the Boston Bar Foundation honored him with its Public Service Award at the 2014 John & Abigail Adams Benefit.
Huston added, “The Boston Bar Association is deeply grateful for Mayor Menino’s commitment to this city and his leadership as Boston’s longest serving Mayor. Our sincere condolences go out to his friends and family. We will miss him greatly.”
