Celebrating a Unified Commitment to Diversity and Service: The Boston Bar Association to Present the Beacon Award for Diversity and Inclusion to Six Massachusetts Affinity Bar Associations

Press Release

“Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”
–American Poet Mattie Stepanek

The collaborative spirit and practice of six Massachusetts Affinity Bar Associations – the Asian American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorneys, the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, the Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys, the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association, and the South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston – has earned them the 6th Annual Beacon Award for Diversity & Inclusion.

Each of these volunteer-led organizations has made an impressive impact on Boston’s legal community and the community at large by bringing together attorneys committed to the values of professional excellence, service, and diversity. They not only foster camaraderie through networking and mentorship, but serve as a valuable source for members’ professional development. In particular, the Beacon Award Nominating Committee was struck by the affinity bars’ extensive collaboration in cross-cultural support of all diverse professionals.

“After considering the laudable efforts of numerous law firms, corporations, individuals, and other professional organizations, programs, and schools, the members of the Beacon Award Nominating Committee voted unanimously to award to these six organizations this year,” said Mark Roellig, Executive Vice President & General Counsel at MassMutual Financial Group and Chair of the BBA’s Beacon Award Nominating Committee. “With this award, we hope to send a strong message that firms, other corporations and all those in our profession should support affinity bar associations and to encourage more attorneys to join and get involved with their communities.”

The 6th Annual Beacon Award for Diversity & Inclusion Section will take place on November 19th at the Liberty Hotel in Boston. Sharing in the celebration will be other leaders of the legal community, including members and officers of the Women’s Bar Association.

Since 2010, the Beacon Award has brought together the legal community to celebrate, inspire and learn from those who have made a true and measurable difference. The Beacon Award event continues to remain free to attend, thanks to the generous contributions of our sponsors.
