Nine years after the Boston Bar Association (BBA) created a program designed to identify lawyers with leadership potential in the early stages of their careers, and help them become leaders, Boston Bar Association President Lisa C. Goodheart today announced that the BBA Public Interest Leadership Program (PILP) has been revamped to reflect the needs of lawyers in 2012 and beyond. Today’s re-launch follows a study involving PILP alums — co-chaired by Kathleen Henry, Deputy General Counsel, Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation, and Christina Miller, Assistant District Attorney, Suffolk County.
“The PILP work group really nailed it when they reported that ‘PILP is a highly valuable tool to identify and recognize present and future leaders in the BBA and the Boston legal community, contribute to the professional and leadership development of promising young attorneys, and integrate them into the BBA and the public service landscape while significantly contributing to the public interest’,” said Goodheart. “At the same time, the work group identified the need for more structure as well as more frequent, but shorter meetings spread over a longer time frame. We expect that the re-tooled program structure will make an excellent program even better.”
The new PILP program is still targeted toward lawyers who are within 10 years of graduating from law school. The time commitment required of applicants will be 150 hours over 14 months, providing a strong opportunity for each PILP class to benefit from the knowledge and experience of their predecessor class.
Now accepting applications for a class that will begin in May 2012, PILP will be run out of the BBA’s Public Service Committee. The PILP Program will be co-chaired by Kathleen Henry and Darren Braham, an associate at Prince Lobel Tye. Both Henry and Braham are PILP alums.
