Boston Bar Journal to Release Special Edition to Commemorate 10th Anniversary of Goodridge

Underscoring its longstanding commitment to marriage equality, the Boston Bar Association today announced that its flagship publication, the Boston Bar Journal, will be producing a special edition to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the decision in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health. To be published on Monday, November 18th, the date that the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts issued its landmark decision giving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry in Massachusetts, this special edition will celebrate and examine Goodridge’s repercussions and related developments over the past decade.

The articles in this upcoming special edition of the Boston Bar Journal will include:

• “The Written Word: Reflections on Composing a Major Civil Rights Decision” by Justice Michael Streit, who lost the retention election for his seat on the Iowa Supreme Court because he joined in the unanimous decision of that court to strike down a same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional
• “From Goodridge to Gill“ by Mary Bonauto (GLAD), who argued for the plaintiffs in Goodridge and later was involved in Gill vs. Office of Personnel Management, which successfully sought to overturn section 3 of DOMA
• “A State’s Fight For Marriage Equality: Fulfilling Goodridge’s Promise by Ending DOMA” by Maura Healey, former Chief of the Attorney General’s Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau and who argued the state’s successful challenge to DOMA
• “All in the Family” by Richard Yurko (Yurko, Salvesen & Remz), a member of the Journal’s Board of Editors and Treasurer of GLAD
• “Goodridge as a Beacon” by Eric Isaacson, a California attorney who since 2004 has represented religious organizations on a pro bono basis as litigants and as amici curiae supporting the right of same-sex couples to marry

The Boston Bar Association has been involved in the marriage equality effort since 2002, when it filed an amicus brief in favor of the plaintiffs in Goodridge.
