For the second consecutive year, the Boston Bar Foundation (BBF) Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to provide $37,130 to fund summer jobs for ten Boston Public High School students. The funding of the ten students comes from the BBF’s Austin P. Jones and M. Ellen Carpenter memorial funds.
“Funding ten summer jobs for Boston Public High School students highlights the commitment of the BBF to increase the diversity & inclusion pipeline into the legal profession and providing ethnically and racially diverse teens with educational enrichment opportunities,” said Foundation President Jack Clymer. “I view it as a call to action to law firms in Greater Boston to join us in creating a strong future for Boston’s youth and the legal profession.”
The Summer Jobs Program, targeted towards Boston Public High School juniors and seniors, is an eight week, paid internship program that allows law firms, offices and legal departments to invest in Boston’s future. Since its inception in 1993, the program — a partnership of the BBA, the Boston Private Industry Council and the Boston Public Schools — has had a positive impact on more than 400 urban youths.
In addition to the BBF’s funding of 10 jobs, BBA Sponsor Firm Hirsch Roberts Weinstein has donated $2,600 — the amount it costs to hire one student — to the Boston Bar Foundation so a government agency or nonprofit legal office can employ a student for the summer. The donation demonstrates that even law firms unable to accommodate a student this summer can still support the Summer Jobs Program.
To date, 30 law firms and organizations have committed to hiring 34 students for the summer, thanks in large part to the hard work of 2013 Summer Jobs Co-Chairs Ned Notis-McConarty (Hemenway & Barnes) and Jeff Mittleman (Holland & Knight).
