The Boston Bar Association is deeply troubled by the recent killings in Georgia, and is horrified by the possibility that they represent a deadly new escalation in what has been a disturbing increase in violence and hate crimes against Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) members of our community. That the Georgia attacker may have singled out women as targets only adds to the concern we should all feel.
As an organization committed to serving the community at large, we stand in solidarity with the AAPI community and add our voice to those saying that the targeting of any individual based on their race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, or gender identity is an assault on the very notion of community and the principle of equal protection under the law.
Today and always, we join in mourning with the families, friends, loved ones and allies of the victims when tragedies like this occur. Such hate-based violence sometimes garners headlines, but we must also recognize the daily harassment and discrimination that rarely does. The Boston Bar will persist in its efforts to address systemic racism and exclusion for all communities of color and other historically underrepresented communities through advocacy, education, and through continued collaboration with community and Affinity Bar partners.
