KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Adam Liptak, the New York Times Supreme Court correspondent, will speak on recent developments in the law and his experience covering decisions from the Supreme Court in recent years. A former litigator who focused on First Amendment issues, Liptak started writing for the Times in 2002. His column “Sidebar” on developments in the law has been running since 2007, and his series “American Exception,” which covered ways in which the United States’ legal system differs from those of other developed nations, was a 2009 Pulitzer Prize finalist in explanatory reporting.
HONOREES
New BBA President Julia Huston will honor the members of the BBA’s Statewide Task Force to Expand Civil Legal Aid in Massachusetts, an initiative started in 2013 by then-BBA President J.D. Smeallie, for their commitment to expanding access to justice in Massachusetts by determining the unmet need for civil legal aid in the state and exploring ways to address it.
The BBA will also present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Edward J. Barshak of Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C. Barshak, who served as President of the BBA from 1974-1976, led the BBA to have a reputable voice in matters of public policy, including the busing crisis, and has made legal services advocacy a priority for his entire career.
OVERVIEW
The 2014 Annual Meeting Luncheon will be the first public event over which BBA President Julia Huston, a partner at Foley Hoag, presides.
The event is sold out, and over 1,100 members of Boston’s legal community are expected to attend.
