A Legislative Action Alert from the Boston Bar Association

Press Release

Dear BBA Member:

We are asking for your help in urging your representative to sponsor an amendment that would increase the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) fiscal year 2015 budget line item from $13 million to $17 million. MLAC is the primary funding source for many of the civil legal aid organizations in the state.

The House Ways & Means Committee has allocated only $13 million for MLAC — $4 million less than MLAC’s fiscal year 2015 request.  Representative Ruth Balser (D. Newton) will be filing an amendment this week to increase this line item to $17 million in the final House budget.

Please call or email your state representative TODAY and ask him or her to do two things:

  1. Co-sponsor Representative Balser’s Amendment to increase MLAC funding levels to $17 million.
  2. Contact Speaker DeLeo and House Ways and Means Chair Dempsey and specifically convey his or her support for this amendment.

Click here to find some additional helpful information about MLAC. Thank you for all that you do to support access to justice for all in the Commonwealth.
