BBA Applauds Governor Baker on His Nomination of Serge Georges, Jr., to the Supreme Judicial Court

Boston Bar Association President Martin F. Murphy issued the following statement regarding Governor Charlie Baker's nomination of Serge Georges, Jr., to the Supreme Judicial Court (SJC):

With his nomination today of Judge Serge Georges, to the Supreme Judicial Court (SJC), Governor Baker has completed a historic remaking of the state’s highest court and ensured that its tradition of excellence will continue well into the future.

Judge Georges—who currently sits in the Dorchester session of the Boston Municipal Court, not far from the Kane Square neighborhood where he grew up—is a jurist of great compassion, empathy, and wisdom. A former criminal-defense attorney and civil litigator, and former President of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, he has served on the bench since 2013. Judge Georges is a true son of Boston, having graduated from B.C. High, Boston College, and Suffolk Law School.

If approved by the Governor’s Council—along with recent nominee Justice Dalila Wendlandt—Judge Georges would become the Governor’s seventh appointee, creating an SJC comprised of justices all named by Governor Baker.

These two appointments, as well as the nomination of SJC Justice Kimberly Budd to become the court‘s next Chief Justice, reflect the critical understanding that diversity at the highest levels of the judiciary need never be in conflict with—but rather is a prerequisite to—the fulfillment of the highest ideals of justice.

The Boston Bar Association traces its origins to meetings convened by John Adams, who provided pro bono representation to the British soldiers prosecuted for the Boston Massacre and went on to become the nation’s second president. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of excellence for the legal profession, facilitate access to justice, serve the community at large and promote diversity and inclusion.
