Liberty Mutual Legal Department to Receive Marshall Award

The Boston Bar Association will present this year’s Thurgood Marshall Award to Liberty Mutual Legal Department for being a trailblazer and role model for in-house law department pro bono efforts. The award will be presented on the afternoon of September 27 at the BBA Annual Meeting Luncheon. James Kelleher, Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, will accept the award on behalf of the department.

Liberty Mutual, a well-respected leader in pro bono, was one of the first in-house departments in Massachusetts to develop a formal pro bono program. While the program started off modestly, today many Liberty Mutual attorneys embrace taking on clients for full-on representation. Liberty Mutual attorneys are engaged in a broad array of pro bono matters, actively participating in the legal clinic for the homeless with Lawyers Clearinghouse, taking cases referred through the BBA’s Lawyer for a Day in the Housing Court Program and working with Citizen Schools to create meaningful after-school activities for Boston school children. They have also been actively involved with the BBA’s Financial Literacy Program.

The Thurgood Marshall Award is presented each year to recognize private attorneys in greater Boston for their extraordinary efforts to enhance the human dignity of others through improving, developing, or delivering civil or criminal legal services to low-income clients in Massachusetts. To learn more about this award or the Annual Meeting Luncheon, click here.
