Veterans and current service members are often targets of predatory lending and financial exploitation. For example, lower-ranking enlisted personnel who have not previously had access to credit are often aggressively offered high interest rate auto loans, credit cards, and payday loans.

Servicemembers are encouraged to sign up to pay these loans with allotments directly from their paychecks, making the true costs not transparent in many cases. Often, VLS learns of these issues after the veteran had a disabling event or exited military service and can no longer keep up with the high interest payments.

This 1-hr program seeks to educate the private bar in the ways in which we can help veterans facing massive amounts of debt and/or possible bankruptcy. Our goal is that you will leave this webinar with a better understanding of the consumer and finance issues facing our military veterans in Massachusetts.  In conjunction with that, we hope you will leave feeling empowered to volunteer to help a veteran in this situation, be it through consultation and legal advice, limited assistance representation, or full representation.

This program is held in partnership with Veterans Legal Services.
