BBA Virtual CLE: Cutting Edge Issues in Criminal Law

Monday, June 14, 2021 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
On-Line

Description:

The BBA presents live webinars and virtual events via Zoom. Please register for this program through your BBA account at least two hours before the start time of the program to receive the Zoom webinar link.

This annual criminal law program is designed to give the practitioner an overview of some of the major developments in state criminal law over the last year.

This year’s program will focus on three broad subject matters:

  • First, the program will commence with a briefing on the issue of “emerging adults,” and a discussion of research suggesting that cognitive and emotional development can continue into a person’s mid-20s. Both defense and prosecution-side practitioners will discuss their litigation in this area and the implications of this research for criminal sentencing.
  • Next, a panel will address the issue of “electronic surveillance,” discussing recent cases from the Supreme Judicial Court as well as issues that will be likely to arise in future cases.
  • Finally, we will have a panel to discuss recent SJC jurisprudence that has changed how the so-called “high-crime area” factor can weigh in the analysis of reasonable suspicion to support a stop or patfrisk.

In this program, you will learn approaches to the law and criminal practice that prosecutors and defenders alike can take full advantage of to maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks of practice in these interesting and important areas of law.
