When Clients Retire Overseas: An Overview of Tax and Legal Considerations

Thursday, September 15, 2016 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description:

Many U.S. citizens and residents dream of retiring abroad to an exotic locale or to a destination where current lifestyles may be maintained on a budget.  Often, however, they are unprepared for complications which may affect their U.S. tax reporting obligations, estate planning goals, access to financial services and family relationships. This program will provide an important overview on the various tax, legal and financial practicalities retirees moving abroad should consider.

After this seminar, attendees will know:

  1. When a retiree has achieved foreign residency status and the implications of this status;
  2. Basic tax treaty provisions which may affect retirees and other resources for avoiding double taxation;
  3. Tax reporting requirements for foreign investments and accounts and the penalties for non-compliance;
  4. Ways in which estate planning goals may be thwarted by a move overseas, including the unintended migration of a domestic trust to foreign trust status, and how to prevent such events;
  5. How to plan for the possibility of divorce overseas and the implications of re-marriage to a non-resident alien spouse;
  6. Practical considerations regarding payments from U.S. retirement plans, maintaining U.S. bank accounts; receiving Social Security and changing addresses; and
  7. How to stay connected through the ex-pat community.

Following the program, attendees are invited to join us for a networking reception. Beer, wine, and hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
