George P. Varghese is a partner in the White Collar Defense and Investigations group at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. George’s practice focuses on federal and state government investigations targeting pharmaceutical, technology, social media, and higher education clients. He is an experienced trial advocate, handling more than 40 trials to verdict. The matters he works on often intersect within the complex dynamic of law, policy, business, and public relations.

During his time at WilmerHale, George secured two significant trial victories on behalf of a major pharmaceutical company against the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services. He has also successfully represented a Fortune 50 health care company related to criminal fraud allegations and a medical device company in connection with a False Claims Act case alleging illegal kickbacks. He has also successfully litigated on behalf of technology and social media companies on issues related to the Stored Communications Act. In his pro bono work, George has litigated on behalf of North Carolina and Georgia voters to protect voting rights.

Prior to joining the firm in 2019, George served for fourteen years as an Assistant United States Attorney in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia, including in the Health Care Fraud, and National Security Sections. During his tenure as a federal prosecutor, George led or co-led major criminal and national security investigations, including the prosecution arising from the nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak linked to a compounding pharmacy that harmed 800 people; the initial investigation into the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing attacks; the 2011 attempted assassination of President Obama; and the prosecutions of several multinational banks for violations of U.S. sanctions laws. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
